There’s a reason Thermador is a heavyweight in the luxury appliance world. They are built beautifully, perform flawlessly, and are generally the crown jewel of any high-end kitchen. But even the best appliances encounter a hiccup now and then.

We recently got called out to look at a Thermador wall oven that was throwing a major temper tantrum. The complaint? It wouldn’t stop heating up, skyrocketing way past the set temperature during preheat and cooking cycles.

Here’s a look inside our diagnostic process and how we got this premium oven back under control.

The Symptom: Runaway Temperatures

Normally, an oven cycles its bake and broil elements on and off to maintain a precise, steady temperature. If you set the oven to 350°F, it should hover right around that mark. This oven, however, just kept climbing.

When an oven keeps climbing in temperature without ever cutting off, you’re usually dealing with a runaway heating element. In this case, the broil element was staying completely energized.

The Diagnosis: A Trapped Relay

After pulling the unit and diving into the electronics, we found the culprit: a stuck relay on the main control board (PCB).

Think of a relay as an electronic light switch. When the oven brain says “we need heat,” it sends a tiny bit of power to close the switch (relay) and send 240V to the broil element. Once the oven reaches the right temperature, the brain cuts the power, and the switch is supposed to spring back open.

In this case, the relay had literally welded itself shut. Even when the oven’s computer cried “Too hot! Turn off!”, the physical switch remained stuck in the “on” position, constantly feeding power to the broil element.

The Fix: Replacing the Main PCB

Because individual relays are soldered directly onto the main control board, the most reliable and long-term solution is to replace the entire main PCB assembly.

We swapped out the faulty board with an OEM Thermador replacement, instantly restoring the oven’s ability to safely cut power to the elements when required.
