We’ve all heard of appliances having a “mind of their own,” but recently I encountered a customer’s Samsung front-load washing machine that took things a bit too literally. This washer wasn’t just vibrating — it was actively trying to escape the laundry room.
By the time it reached the spin cycle, the shaking was so violent that the entire unit would physically walk right across the floor.
If your washing machine is doing the spin-cycle shuffle, you don’t need an exorcist. You likely just need a common mechanical fix. Here is exactly what was causing the runaway washer, and how we fixed it.
The Culprit: Worn-Out Shock Absorbers
Front-load washing machines are heavy-duty engineering marvels. Because the drum spins horizontally at incredibly high speeds (often over 1,000 RPM), it generates massive centrifugal force. To keep that force from tearing the machine apart — or shaking your house down — front-loaders rely on a system of suspension springs at the top and shock absorbers (struts) at the bottom.
Over time, the grease or padding inside those shock absorbers degrades. When that happens:
- They lose their dampening ability.
- The drum begins to bounce completely unchecked.
- The kinetic energy transfers directly into the frame of the washer, causing it to “walk.”
The Fix: Out with the Old, In with the New
Once we confirmed that the suspension springs were still intact, we focused on the shock absorbers at the base of the tub.
Replacing them requires opening up the washer housing, unbolting the worn-out struts, and installing a fresh, calibrated set.
The Result
After securing the new shock absorbers and putting the Samsung back together, we ran a test spin with a heavy load.
The difference was night and day. The violent thrashing and wandering were entirely gone. Instead, the machine sat perfectly in place, vibrating ever so slightly — exactly the way a healthy, well-balanced front-loader is designed to do.
